Physical & Mental Health Keep Golden Years Golden

Going into retirement, we spend a lot of time focused on being financially prepared. But we often neglect to think about how we are going to maintain our health. Being physically and mentally healthy is what makes the golden years golden.

Physical Fitness

We know being active is an important part of staying healthy at any age. But as you enter into retirement, it becomes even more critical.

There are countless health benefits– lower weight, increased energy, less chronic illness. So what are the best ways to stay active?

It can be as simple as walking the dog, or playing with the grand kids. Whatever keeps you moving. You could join a sports team or go to your local gym. Check out your local recreation center to see what senior programs are offered. Many offer sports leagues, fitness classes, and athletic competitions year round.

Mind the Mental Health

The most important aspect of all is minding your mental health. When facing retirement, many struggle to adjust to their new lifestyles, and as a result suffer from declining mental health, such as battles with depression. Depression occurs when the chemicals in the brain become out of balance, affecting the way you think, act, and the energy you feel on a daily basis.

Depression and other mental diseases such as anxiety are real and serious disorders. If you notice symptoms, such as lack of general energy, overall emptiness in emotional state, or feeling distant from loved ones or activities, there is no shame in seeking help and treatment.

Living a full balanced life can help combat depression before it starts. Social activity and exercise have both been shown to decrease depression symptoms. So don’t be afraid to branch out and create the lifestyle you always wanted. Find hobbies you love, journal, spend time with loved ones. Whatever you need, keep yourself up. But above all, remember your mental health is just as important as the physical. And good health is just as much of a key to a good retirement as a good financial plan.
